Consultation
A consultation starts with a brief phone call. In this phone call, I will listen to the concern that have brought you to the call, and I will answer your questions about my background and clinical skills. If we think we might be a good fit, we will schedule a consultation. Before you arrive for the consultation, I will send you some forms to complete and ask you to provide information that you think may be helpful for our work (e.g., prior testing, IEP's, report cards, annual reviews). I will review this paperwork before your consultation. At the consultation, we will have a more in-depth conversation about your concerns, and I will provide recommendations for next steps. These next steps may include work in my practice and/or a referral to a different or complementary provider.
Assessment
Assessments are a fundamental tool in understanding the nature of your difficulty. Findings from assessments allow me to identify the root of the cognitive-linguistic difficulty that you are experiencing, which allows me to treat the cause of the difficulty instead of the symptom. I provide two types of assessments: a Spoken and Written Language Assessment and a Cognitive-Linguistic Assessment. We will discuss together which evaluation is appropriate to meet your needs. The assessment will result in a written report with specific recommendations on how to address identified areas of difficulty.
Instruction
Individual therapy sessions are designed to target the specific needs of the client and Follow the therapy plan identified in the assessment. Individual therapy is typically provided once weekly in 50-minute sessions. The duration of individual therapy is depending on the client's background, cognitive-linguistic profile, goals, and response to intervention. Progress is marked against the therapy plan and discussed during sessions with adult clients and in separately scheduled meetings with younger clients and their caregiver(s).
Presentations
Presentations are available for the purposes of parent education and professional development.
Parent Education: Parents are often confused as to why their adolescent who enjoyed creative writing as a child now struggles so fiercely with expository writing (e.g., five paragraph essays) and how the same child who can talk for hours about a topic will sit in front of a computer screen unable to start writing. This presentation provides an organization-based explanation for these struggles and provides tips and resources for supporting your child's development of organization, writing skills, and study skills.
Professional development: A two-hour professional development presentation is offered as an introduction to the fundamentals of organization and its impact on language processing, specifically on written expression. This talk is for anyone who would like to better understand an organizational perspective on why creative people, who have many ideas, can have difficulty putting those ideas down on paper.
